Why You Should Hire a Professional Organiser

If you have landed here, chances are that you understand the value of being organised and you might be thinking about getting some outside help to make that happen (yay!). In which case, you probably have some questions about the process and what to expect when hiring a professional organiser.

What does a professional organiser do?

Each home, workplace and client is unique, so our work is extremely varied. Some pro organisers work with specific types of clients like the elderly or those with hoarding disorders and others specialise in certain areas like photo organising, home staging or office organisation.

No matter what type of job I am undertaking, the principle is the same and that is to help clients to edit their belongings and put in place practical and sustainable systems so that their space is fully optimised to support their needs and lifestyle.

Is a professional organiser worth it?

Decluttering and organising can be physically and emotionally demanding and people often get overwhelmed with where to start. A professional organiser will not only be an extra pair of hands but will also provide guidance and emotional support to keep you motivated and on track.

Having a fresh pair of eyes on your space from a neutral party who will take an objective view of your belongings and will come brimming with ideas and enthusiasm can be the kick start you need to tackle that job you’ve been putting off. What’s more, we thrive on problem solving and helping people to achieve their goals.

How much does a professional declutter and organiser cost?

The cost of hiring a professional organiser is project and location dependent but is often cheaper than people think and many of my clients are amazed at what can be achieved in a short space of time. Most organisers work on an hourly rate which, at the time of writing, averages £35 - £60 with London being at the upper end.

However, the hourly rate is not the only thing to consider, make sure that you understand if there are additional costs such as travel, parking or supplies. Some organisers also charge a fee for researching and shopping for products.

To keep things simple, Curate My Space works on an all-inclusive rate which you can find out more about here.

Will a professional organiser make me throw things away?

Absolutely not! They are your belongings and decisions about what to keep and what to let go of are yours. However, if you are feeling overwhelmed or not sure where to start with decluttering, an organiser can support you in making those decisions by keeping you accountable and task focused.

Not only should we be mindful about the things that we bring into our homes, it’s also important to consider how we dispose of those belongings that we no longer need and love. Working with a professional organiser will give you access to their list of resources for the best places to sell, donate or recycle unwanted items.

I’d feel guilty about paying someone else for something I should be doing myself.

Hiring a professional who has the tools, experience and time to get a job done is nothing to feel guilty about and asking for help is never a sign of weakness - in fact it means that you are motivated and ready to take action and that is to be applauded.

Having a disorganised space can be a mental and emotional drain but there are those of us who truly love the jobs you hate!

When you hire a professional organiser it’s not just an investment in your home, it’s an investment in you, your family, and your well-being, it’s truly a form of self-care.

But my house is embarrassingly messy!

This is something that I hear all the time and it’s often the biggest barrier to someone reaching out. Trust me, a professional organiser is going to have seen it all before. They will be respectful and non-judgemental and most importantly their services will be completely confidential.

When a client is worried about showing me a messy, cluttered space, I tell them I’m grateful because I wouldn’t have a job if everyone was a super organised minimalist!

How can I find a professional organiser near me?

The best place is the Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers (APDO) website which has a search function here.

All members listed on the directory hold professional indemnity insurance and are bound by APDO’s code of ethics.
